How to convert a WhatsApp voice note to MP3

  1. 1

    Save the voice note

On Android, WhatsApp keeps voice notes as .opus files in its Voice Notes folder; on iPhone, press and hold the voice note, tap Forward, then Share and Save to Files. Telegram voice messages are .ogg files.

  2. 2

    Pick the file here

Choose it with the button above. The converter reads it in your browser and shows the progress while it encodes the MP3.

  3. 3

    Play, download or transcribe

Listen to the MP3 to check it, tap Download MP3, or tap "Transcribe this audio to text with HiText" to get the words written out.

What the converter does

It decodes the audio with your browser's own audio engine and encodes it as MP3 at 44.1 kHz with lamejs, an open-source MP3 encoder (LGPL) that runs in the page: mono files at 64 kbps and stereo files at 128 kbps, which is plenty for voice. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works with private messages.

If your browser can't read a file, you'll see a message instead of a broken MP3. The usual fix is Chrome or Firefox on a computer.

Need the text, not the MP3?

You don't have to convert a voice note to MP3 to transcribe it. HiText accepts OPUS and OGG directly: see WhatsApp audio to text and OGG and OPUS to text, or try the free audio to text tool. For subtitles, use the SRT to TXT converter.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The file is read, decoded and encoded to MP3 inside your browser. It isn't uploaded or stored anywhere, and the page doesn't need an account.

Which files can I convert?

Voice notes from WhatsApp (.opus) and Telegram (.ogg), plus OGA, M4A, WAV and WEBM audio, up to 25 MB and 15 minutes. Whether a format opens depends on your browser: if it can't read the file, you'll see a message.

What quality is the MP3?

44.1 kHz, 64 kbps for mono recordings like voice notes and 128 kbps for stereo. For voice that is more than the original voice note carries, so it won't sound worse.

Can I convert the voice note straight to text?

Yes, with HiText. It reads OPUS and OGG as they are, and gives you the transcript and an AI summary in minutes. Your first 30 minutes are free.

Is the converter free?

Yes, it's free and has no daily limit. It runs on your device, so we don't pay per conversion and don't need to limit it.
