How to convert an OPUS or OGG file to text

To convert an OPUS or OGG file to text, share it to HiText from WhatsApp, Telegram or your Files app, or upload it in the HiText web app. On Android you can also pick it with File. In a few minutes you get the transcript, an AI summary and, if it's in another language, a translation. Your first 30 minutes are free.

OPUS or OGG to text, step by step

  1. 1

    Find the voice file

WhatsApp voice notes are OPUS files; Telegram voice messages are OGG. On Android, WhatsApp keeps them in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes.

  2. 2

    Send it to HiText

Share it from the chat or from Files and choose HiText. On Android you can also open HiText, tap File and pick it. On a computer, upload it in the web app.

  3. 3

    Read the text

In a few minutes the transcript appears, with a summary of what matters. Copy it, share it or keep it in a folder.

What OPUS and OGG files are

Opus is the audio codec messaging apps use for voice notes: tiny files with clear speech. WhatsApp saves them as .opus and Telegram as .ogg (Opus inside an Ogg container). Many players and converters don't open them, but HiText transcribes them directly, without converting to MP3 first.

On iPhone: use the Share menu

On iPhone, the File picker inside HiText only lists MP3, M4A, WAV and video files, so OPUS and OGG files are sent with the Share menu instead:

  • From WhatsApp: press and hold the voice note, tap Forward, then the share icon, and choose HiText
  • From the Files app: press and hold the .opus or .ogg file, tap Share and choose HiText
  • On a computer: upload the file in the web app, which accepts OPUS, OGG and OGA

Just want to read WhatsApp voice notes?

If you don't need the file itself, the quickest way is to share the voice note straight from the chat. Step-by-step guide in WhatsApp audio to text. For other formats, see M4A to text or WAV to text.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to convert OPUS or OGG to text with HiText?

You start with 30 free minutes of transcription, no card needed. To keep transcribing you can subscribe to Pro inside the app; you see the price before paying and can cancel any time from your App Store or Google Play subscription settings.

Do I need to convert the OPUS file to MP3 first?

No. HiText accepts OPUS, OGG and OGA as they are and transcribes them directly, both in the app and on the web.

Why can't I see my .opus file when I tap File on iPhone?

On iPhone the picker only shows MP3, M4A, WAV and video files. Share the OPUS or OGG file to HiText from WhatsApp, Telegram or Files instead, or upload it at app.trytiro.app.

Can I transcribe Telegram voice messages?

Yes. Telegram voice messages are OGG files: share or save the file and send it to HiText. You can read the text, the summary and a translation if it's in another language.

What happens to my voice notes?

Your audio is used only to transcribe it and is deleted from our servers when it's done (at most within 7 days if something fails). The transcript and summary are kept on your device and on our servers until you delete them in the app. We don't use your content to train AI models. Details in our privacy policy.
