How to turn a voice recorder recording into text on Android

Where your recordings are saved
- Samsung: My Files › Internal storage › Recordings › Voice Recorder (usually M4A files)
- Pixel: inside the Recorder app; export the audio with Share › File › Audio
- Other brands: look for a Recordings, Recorder or Music folder in your Files app
- In HiText, tap File to pick it directly: it accepts M4A, MP3, WAV, AAC, AMR, OGG, OPUS, FLAC and video files
Doesn't my recorder transcribe already?
On Pixel phones the Recorder app transcribes on its own in some languages, depending on the model. HiText adds what most built-in recorders don't: 13 languages with automatic detection, an AI summary, a translation into the language you choose and, for classes, a quiz and flashcards to study. And it works with any brand of phone.
Long recordings, meetings and classes
Files up to 2 GB fit, so a recording of an hour or more is no problem. To get a clean transcript, put the phone close to whoever is speaking and away from noise. For meetings and interviews see how to transcribe interviews and meetings; for iPhone recordings, voice memo to text.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a voice recording to text for free?
You start with 30 free minutes of transcription, no card needed. To keep transcribing you can subscribe to Pro inside the app; you see the price before paying and can cancel any time from your Google Play subscription settings.
HiText doesn't show up when I tap Share. What do I do?
Open HiText once after installing it and try again. You can also open HiText, tap File and pick the recording from the Recordings folder.
Can I record directly in HiText?
Yes. HiText has its own recorder: tap record, and when you stop it transcribes the audio.
What happens to my recordings?
Your audio is used only to transcribe it and is deleted from our servers when it's done (at most within 7 days if something fails). The transcript and summary are kept until you delete them in the app. We don't use your content to train AI models. Details in our privacy policy.
Can I do it on my computer too?
Yes. Copy the file to your computer, open app.trytiro.app, sign in and upload it. You can download the transcript as a TXT file.
