WAV files are big: what that means

WAV is uncompressed audio, so it weighs much more than MP3 or M4A: about 600 MB per hour in CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) and more at 24-bit or 48 kHz. Transcription only needs the voice, so a smaller file gives the same text.

  • Web app: up to 1 GB per file, which is roughly 1.5 hours of CD-quality stereo WAV
  • For longer sessions, export to mono or to M4A/MP3 in your editor before uploading (M4A to text)
  • Or split the recording into parts by topic

Where WAV files come from

  • Field recorders (Zoom H-series, Tascam, Sony) and USB microphones
  • Audio editors and DAWs such as Audacity, GarageBand or Adobe Audition
  • Some Android recorder apps when set to WAV or lossless quality
  • Interviews and podcasts recorded for later editing

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to convert WAV to text with HiText?

You start with 30 free minutes of transcription, no card needed. To keep transcribing you can subscribe to Pro inside the app; you see the price before paying and can cancel any time from your App Store or Google Play subscription settings.

Is there a file size limit?

In the web app the limit is 1 GB per file. If your WAV is bigger, export it as mono or as M4A/MP3, or split it. The voice comes through the same.

Does higher WAV quality give a better transcript?

Not much. What matters is a clear voice close to the mic with little background noise. 16 kHz mono is already enough for speech.

Can I transcribe WAV on my computer?

Yes. Sign in at app.trytiro.app, upload the WAV and you get the transcript, summary and translation, ready to copy or download as TXT.

What happens to my files?

Your audio is used only to transcribe it and is deleted from our servers when it's done (at most within 7 days if something fails). The transcript and summary are kept on your device and on our servers until you delete them in the app. We don't use your content to train AI models. Details in our privacy policy.
